Eggs-plore the Farm Fresh Difference: Unlocking Nutritional Treasures

Our eggs come directly from hens raised on our small farm and offer several benefits compared to store-bought eggs. Here are some of the advantages of buying fresh eggs from Five and a Half North Farm.

Better Taste and Texture

Many people find farm-fresh eggs have a better taste and texture than store-bought eggs. The yolks are often more vibrant and flavorful, and the whites may be thicker and fluffier, making them ideal for various applications.

Better for You

Farm-fresh eggs tend to have higher nutritional value. They typically contain more vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and less saturated fats and bad cholesterol than eggs from factory-farmed hens. Our chickens' diet includes pellets and natural foods too, which can enhance the nutrient profile of their eggs.

Pasture-Raised Eggs Have a Lower Risk of Contamination

Because small-farm chickens are typically raised in cleaner environments than commercial egg producers provide, eggs from small farms often have a lower risk of contamination by bacteria like Salmonella.

Our chickens run around the farm daily, which lets them naturally forage. We even planted a chicken garden for them! Letting them wander helps prevent disease transmission. When we mow the yard, or it's cold, we put them up in a large chicken house with a covered run that gives them access to outdoor space.

Know the Source

When you buy fresh eggs from a local farm, you know exactly where your eggs come from and how the hens are raised. This lets you make more informed choices about the food you eat.

Ethical and Humane Treatment

We prioritize our feathered ladies' welfare. Our hens are free-range and pasture-raised, which gives them more space to roam, exhibit natural behaviors, and access sunlight and fresh air.

Our chicken coop is powered, so it can be heated in the wintertime, and it's insulated to keep the chickens comfortable. They love their treats, classical music, and when I sing to them.

We don't use pine bedding because it's dusty (and costly), opting instead for a sand floor that's easier to clean.

Supporting Local Agriculture

Buying eggs from Five and a Half North Farm supports local farmers and small-scale agriculture, contributing to the local economy.

Reduced Environmental Impact

We use sustainable farming practices, such as avoiding harmful chemicals and minimizing waste by feeding our chickens lots of fresh veggie scraps to supplement their diet. Choosing eggs from a small farm like ours can help reduce the environmental impact of egg production.

No Added Hormones or Antibiotics

Our hens are raised without the use of added hormones or antibiotics, which lets them grow at a natural pace and have healthier egg production.

Not all farm fresh eggs are the same - farming practices can vary widely, but if you're interested in reaping the benefits of fresh eggs, consider getting them from our farm. We offer a one-time purchase or subscription model where you can get fresh eggs weekly and ensure your family gets the highest quality eggs.
